Holly Holm defends Ronda Rousey

Holly Holm produced a stunning upset to defeat Ronda Rousey on Sunday – and now she has urged the critics to stop trashing the former champion.

Rousey has taken flak from such important opinion-formers as Lady Gaga and Donald Trump for what they perveived as poor sportsmanship before the pair’s fight in Melbourne on Saturday. Rousey called Holm a “fake humility bitch” and refused to touch gloves with her, but Holm has risen above the chatter.

“I think people can be pretty brutal,” Holm told TMZ Sports. “And when you’re in the spot she’s in, there are people that are just going to jump ship, and I don’t ever wish for that.

“I do think that I come from a more humble spot,” Holm said. “[I never want] to say something and look like a fool.”

Prior to her loss, Rousey taunted Holm on Instagram by saying: “’Preacher’s daughter’ my ass – I see through your fake sweet act now – you’re getting your ass kicked tomorrow, and I’m really going to enjoy the beating I give you #andSTILL.”

Holm, 34, is the daughter of a Church of Christ pastor.

She told TMZ: “Ronda’s been a very dominant champ and she’s taken the sport to new levels. This fight wouldn’t’ve happened if she hadn’t accomplished what she’s accomplished, so I have a lot of respect for her.

“Don’t get me wrong, I don’t want to give away any bit of my victory, so I’ll take it. I’ll take the win and I’ll take that I took it dominantly. That doesn’t mean that I wish any harm on her. That doesn’t mean that I wish any hate on her. I think people can be pretty brutal, and when you’re in the spot that she’s in, there are people who are just going to jump ship and I don’t ever wish for that,” she said.

However, Holm told TMZ Sports that although she may be coming from a more “humble spot,” the fight wouldn’t have been possible without Rousey. “Ronda’s been a very dominant champ and she’s taken the sport to new levels. This fight wouldn’t’ve happened if she hadn’t accomplished what she’s accomplished, so I have a lot of respect for her,” she said.

She also spoke about wanting people to leave the former champ alone.

Ronda Rousey did her best to hide her disappointment as she touched down in the United States following her humiliating defeat at the weekend.

The dethroned UFC world champion walked into LAX wearing sunglasses following her flight from Melbourne - using a pillow to cover her face.

She was likely hiding the injuries caused by a savage kick to her jaw from Holly Holm that sent her crashing to the canvas on Saturday night.

The stunning blow completed a huge MMA upset by the challenger - ending Rousey's undefeated record and reign as the one of the world's most feared female fighters.

Yes, everyone was predicting that undefeated MMA fighter Ronda Rousey would beat Holly Holm last weekend—but that’s not what happened. Instead Holm won the match with a well-placed kick to the head. Boom, Ronda was out. If you really knew who would win these matches ahead of time, why fight?

From a physics perspective, what can we figure out from this final kick to the head? Can we estimate the impact force from this hit? Well, yes—we can always estimate something, even if it requires some wild guesses. That’s never stopped me before; why should it stop me now?

Let me start with some video analysis. If you search for a while, you can find a shot of “the kick” seem from above. This view is nice, since you can see the whole horizontal motion of the kick as Holly whacks Ronda in the face. It’s not a perfect video (some frame rate issues), but it will do. Scaling the video based on the length of Holly’s leg, I get the following trajectory for her foot.
